Cold rolling is performed by unwinding the hot roll coil and passing the strip
through pairs of horizontal rolls or mill "stands". Blair operates "tandem"
cold mills which utilize two or three stands. Each roll set reduces the steel
by a preset percentage until the finished thickness is reached. Blair's narrow
tandem strip mills are uniquely capable of cold rolling exceptional tolerances
on strip up to and heavier than a half inch thick in various steel grades.

Blair uses tandem mills to cold reduce hot rolled coils to lighter thicknesses,
establish uniform hardness, accurate dimensional tolerances and the required
surface finish.
